Orthodontic treatment uses appliances, tooth removal, or surgery depending on the patient’s age and the complexity of the case. The orthodontist will time the treatments to match the child’s natural growth or adult’s age.

  • Extraction: Removal of some baby teeth to help in severe crowding and make space for the permanent teeth to erupt.
  • Braces: These are appliances that correct dental irregularities and are commonly used in the treatment of malocclusion. These apply constant gentle force to slowly change the position of teeth, straighten them and properly align them with the opposing teeth.
  • Removable appliances: These appliances can be inserted and removed by the patient.
  • Retainers: These are appliances that are used to hold the teeth in their new positions after orthodontic treatment is complete. They are inserted after the removal of braces. Retainers do not move teeth; they only stabilize them in their current position. Retainers can be fixed inside the mouth permanently or removable.
  • Jaw surgery: In some cases, the child may need jaw surgery to correct the bite problem when the bones of the jaw are involved in the malocclusion problem. In this case, initial orthodontic treatment to align the teeth so they will fit properly after the surgery is performed.
Do Braces Hurt?

Braces do not cause pain, but they may cause slight discomfort the first few days after you get them and sometimes after appointments with adjustments. To minimize the discomfort, eat soft foods. You may also use warm salt water rinses and if the discomfort is considered severe according to your pain threshold, you can take over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Orthodontic treatment doesn’t stop at the end of your appointment. It is an ongoing process that mostly takes place outside the dental office! That is why cooperation between you and your orthodontist is extremely important to achieve the desired results of a healthy, natural and beautiful smile.
